Did you know that the Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the 7 Wonders of the World?

It is also one of the world's most famous architectural oddities, renowned for its seemingly precarious tilt. Despite leaning at an angle of about 3.97 degrees, the tower has stood for over 800 years!

The question is, why hasn't it fallen yet? Can you visit it before it does?

The Lean

The tower's tilt began during construction in the late 12th century due to the soft, unstable subsoil composed of clay, fine sand, and shells beneath its foundation. Just five years after construction started, the foundation began to settle unevenly, causing the structure to lean.

Medieval Solutions: Early builders tried to compensate for the tilt by constructing upper floors with one side taller than the other. This gave the tower a slight banana shape but did little to stop the leaning.

Modern Efforts: In the 1990s, a major intervention involved removing soil from underneath the higher side and anchoring the structure with lead counterweights. This reduced the tilt from 5.5 degrees to about 3.97 degrees, stabilizing the tower.

Structural Integrity

The tower's construction features thick walls and a circular design, which contribute to its stability. The center of gravity remains within its base, preventing it from toppling. Additionally, the weight of the upper floors helps to counterbalance the tilt.

So, don't worry—you still have time to see it, but it's better sooner rather than later!
