Our recent journey to Wanaka, New Zealand, was nothing short of magical.

Nestled in the Southern Alps, this picturesque town offered us breathtaking landscapes, thrilling outdoor activities, and a charming atmosphere that made it a standout destination on our travels.

Stunning Landscapes

Wanaka is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, and the centerpiece of our visit was undoubtedly Lake Wanaka. The lake’s crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding mountains, creating a postcard-perfect scene.

We spent hours strolling along the lake’s edge, enjoying the serenity and capturing countless photos of the iconic “That Wanaka Tree”—a lone tree standing in the lake that has become a symbol of the region.

There’s no charge to visit the lake, and it’s accessible year-round, though the best time for photos is early morning or late afternoon when the light is most magical.

Adventure Awaits

For thrill-seekers, Wanaka offers a variety of outdoor adventures. We hiked the Rob Roy Glacier Track, a 10-kilometer round trip that took us through lush rainforests and offered stunning views of the glacier and surrounding peaks.

The hike is moderately challenging but incredibly rewarding. The track is open year-round, though winter conditions can make it more difficult, and there’s no entry fee.

Another highlight was our visit to the Cardrona Alpine Resort, just a short drive from Wanaka. In winter, it’s a haven for skiers and snowboarders, but in the summer, it transforms into a mountain biking and hiking paradise.

We spent a day here exploring the trails and enjoying the panoramic views. Day passes for the resort vary; expect to pay around $80 USD for a ski pass in winter and a bit less for mountain biking or hiking access in summer.

Relaxing in Wanaka

After our outdoor adventures, we were thrilled to relax at Edgewater, a luxurious hotel right on the shores of Lake Wanaka. This elegant resort offered us stunning lake views from our room and direct access to the lake’s beach. The hotel features a spa, a fitness center, and a gourmet restaurant that served delicious local cuisine. Rates at Edgewater start at approximately $350 USD per night, making it a premium choice for a comfortable and scenic stay.

Wineries and Local Delights

No trip to Wanaka would be complete without sampling some local flavors. We visited a few nearby wineries and enjoyed drink tastings and delightful local dishes. The relaxed pace of the region allowed us to savor these experiences fully and truly appreciate the area’s culinary offerings.

Lykkers, our time in Wanaka was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. From exploring the serene lake and stunning hikes to enjoying luxurious accommodations and local cuisine, every moment was memorable.

If you’re seeking a destination that combines breathtaking landscapes with a range of activities and a touch of luxury, Wanaka should be at the top of your list. Have you been to Wanaka or have any travel tips to share? We’d love to hear your stories and recommendations!
