During our recent trip to Alicante in Spain’s Valencia region, we were drawn to the magnificent Santa Barbara Castle (Castell de Santa Bàrbara). Set atop Mount Benacantil, this historic fortress provided an unforgettable blend of panoramic views, fascinating history, and a touch of local charm.

Our exploration of Santa Barbara Castle began with its intriguing past. Constructed in the 9th century by the Moors, the castle has seen various phases of development over the centuries. As we strolled through its imposing walls and towers, it was easy to imagine the vibrant life that once filled these spaces.

Among the castle's highlights are the three main towers: the Torre de la Reina, Torre del Homenaje, and Torre del Principe. Each tower offers its own unique vantage point, but the Torre del Homenaje was particularly captivating. From here, we enjoyed breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city below, making it the perfect spot for photos and reflection.

We carefully timed our visit, knowing that Santa Barbara Castle is open daily. From April to October, the castle welcomes visitors from 10 AM to 8 PM. During the cooler months, from November to March, the hours are slightly reduced, with the castle opening from 10 AM to 6 PM. It's a good idea to arrive at least an hour before closing to make the most of your visit.

The entrance fee was very affordable, set at just €3 per person. We also learned that entry is free for children under 18, and Alicante residents can visit without charge. On the last Tuesday of each month, the castle offers free admission to all visitors, which we took advantage of to enhance our experience.

After our castle tour, we were eager to dive into Alicante’s culinary scene. Just a short distance from the castle, we found a cozy local restaurant where we indulged in some traditional Spanish dishes. One standout was the paella, a classic rice dish brimming with fresh seafood. Priced at around €15, it was a delightful way to savor the region’s coastal flavors.

For a lighter and more casual dining experience, we headed to a nearby eatery specializing in tapas. We enjoyed an assortment of small plates, including croquetas (deliciously crispy croquettes) and patatas bravas (crispy potatoes with a spicy sauce), with prices ranging from €5 to €7. To accompany our meal, we ordered a refreshing glass of horchata, a traditional drink made from tiger nuts, for €3. It was the perfect complement to our tapas and a great way to cool down after our exploration.
