The most beautiful scenery is often found on the road, perhaps a shared sentiment among travellers.

Whether by bus, train, or plane, the view outside the window always offers a unique experience.

When you embark on a train journey, whether speeding past or slowly retreating, the world outside the window gives you a sense of authenticity that validates the journey. Hop on a train and explore the beautiful landscapes along these railway routes together!

1. Europe: The Orient Express

Even if you haven't travelled to Europe, you've probably heard of the famous 'Orient Express.' The Orient Express was the most legendary train in European railway history.

When it commenced in 1883, the train travelled from Europe to Istanbul, carrying kings, nobles, and influential historical figures across Eurasia.

The original Orient Express ceased operations in 2009. The current Orient Express, operated by Belmond, is one of the most luxurious trains globally. Adorned with opulent décor, it features rooms and carriages resembling royal palaces.

The train's interiors boast high-quality wooden furniture, exuding luxury in every detail. The European Orient Express primarily traverses major European cities, spanning the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Slovakia, Poland, and Romania, all the way to Istanbul.

2. Regarding Sri Lanka, taking a train ride is an exceptional way to experience the local natural scenery. Two routes are particularly well-known and highly praised: the 'Highland Tea Plantation Line' from Kandy to Ella, known among backpackers; the other, which we'll focus on, is the 'Coastal Line' from Galle to Colombo.

In Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away," Chihiro sits alongside No-Face on a train, slowly travelling across the vast ocean. This classic scene often prompts the question: does this exist in reality? You can experience a similar journey on the Southwest Coastal Railway Line. While the "sea train" doesn't travel on the sea, the railway tracks run near the Indian Ocean, with the closest distance being just one meter.

With the boundless Indian Ocean outside the window and the sea breeze filling the carriage, all worries seem to vanish.

3. Scotland's West Highland Line

This steam train is the same one that appeared in 'Harry Potter' as the Hogwarts Express! It connects the Scottish west coast town of Mallaig to Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland. Lakes, canyons, marshes, and castles surround the 90-minute journey.

Upon reaching the blue shores of Mallaig, one can see small islands like Eigg and Muck, feeling as though they've entered a magical world.

4. United States: California Zephyr

The United States boasts the world's most extensive railway system. Amtrak, the national railway, operates several famous long-distance sleeper trains, including the highly sought-after California Zephyr, renowned as the longest and most beautiful railway route in the U.S.

Established in 1949, the California Zephyr continues its daily round trips, taking 52 hours to cover 2438 kilometres from Chicago to San Francisco. Passing through seven states, the train first stops in Salt Lake City for three hours, allowing passengers to enjoy breathtaking views of majestic mountains and dense forests.

Passengers can also marvel at the magnificent Rocky Mountains from the train windows. As the train speeds through cliffs and canyons along the Colorado River before entering Utah and Nevada's deserts, passengers again witness unforgettable scenery. The dizzying Sierra Nevada mountain pass marks the final scenic point before reaching San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean, providing a perfect conclusion to this cross-country adventure.

Enjoy exploring these incredible railway journeys!
