Unraveling the citrus tale requires a journey back in time, with current research pinpointing its origin in Southeast Asia.


The citrus saga unfolds against the backdrop of the late Miocene period, approximately 6-8 million years ago, propelled by the swift currents of monsoon activity. This journey traversed continents, birthing a spectrum of citrus varieties that continue to captivate taste buds globally.


Though visually akin, Mandarin, tangerine, and orange are distinct citrus varieties, often confusing.


From a scientific standpoint, tangerine is the fundamental species with petite flowers, a well-peeling exterior, and predominantly dark green seed embryos. In contrast, tangerine is a hybrid of orange and sweet orange, featuring larger flowers, less peel quality than its orange counterpart, and light green seed embryos.


The term "mandarins" encompasses tangerines and oranges, underscoring their shared heritage within the Citrus genus, the paramount group of citrus fruit trees boasting 17 species divided into six distinct groups.


Tangerines, the most diminutive trio, present with orange-red, vermilion, or orange-yellow rinds. The red rind variety leans slightly sweeter, while the yellow rind carries a subtle acidity. With thin and loose peel, a thin spongy layer, and 7 to 11 pulpy petals, tangerines offer a sweet or sour orange flavor with pointed, slender seeds and a vulnerability to storage challenges.


Oranges, a diverse family encompassing eight varieties, exhibit smooth, thin skin enveloping tightly packed sacs, making them less prone to peeling. As hybrids of tangerines and grapefruits, oranges showcase round or oblong fruits, smooth and thin skin, tight capsules, and a moderately sweet and sour taste and rich aroma.


Citrus, representing a larger fruit with a thin, easily peeled skin, emits a fragrant aroma and tender texture. Exhibiting a sweet and sour profile, some varieties contain seeds rich in diverse vitamins. Among them, the mandarin orange stands out with bright colors, loose peel for easy access, crisp flesh, and a succulent essence, leaving a sweet aftertaste that is uniquely delightful.


The growth and development of orange fruit trees are intricately linked to environmental factors such as temperature, sunlight, humidity, soil composition, and more. Notably, even a 0.5℃ temperature difference can yield vastly different outcomes.


The critical temperature range for orange fruit growth spans from 12.5 to 37°C, with flowering requiring specific day and night temperatures in the fall. Beyond temperature, citrus trees prefer warm, humid climates and are intolerant to extreme cold.


Temperature fluctuations also influence the quality of citrus fruits, impacting sugar content, soluble solids, and acidity. Citrus trees exhibit sensitivity to low and high temperatures, with frost damage occurring below -8 ℃ and growth halting above 37 ℃.
