<h3>What is it?</h3>
Punamii-Uunpuu, also known as Mitchell Falls, is a stunning four-tiered waterfall. Located in the remote Mitchell Plateau of the Kimberley, it features water flowing down a rugged cliff in deep pools of emerald-green water. The waterfall spans a total height of 80 meters, offering breathtaking views.
Nearby, you can explore incredible rock art sites and picturesque swimming spots, making it a truly memorable destination.
<h3> Where is it?</h3>
Located in the Mitchell River National Park in the Kimberley, Mitchell Falls is a beauty that's well worth the effort to reach! To get there, pack your 4WD (high clearance required) and head onto the Gibb River Road. After about 240 kilometers from Kununurra or 416 kilometers from Derby, you'll reach the junction to Kalumburu Road.
Turn off there to access the Mitchell Plateau Track (Port Warrender Road) and the Mitchell Falls Campground. As you drive along the rugged Port Warrender Road, which winds narrowly through towering Livistona palms and spectacular scenery, you'll feel like you've stepped into a prehistoric landscape.
<b>Here's a word of warning:</b> The track to Mitchell Falls can be extremely rough with heavy corrugation, making for slow going. If you're towing a camper trailer or anything else, consider leaving it at Drysdale River Station for a small fee. The station offers fuel, supplies, tyres, campsites, and tours to Mitchell Falls.

<h3> Pack your hiking shoes</h3>
The Mitchell Falls is the breathtaking reward after tackling the somewhat challenging 4.3-kilometer trek from the campground, which involves some rock hopping. Once you arrive, you can enjoy stunning views from various vantage points while listening to the powerful roar of the falls cascading from pool to pool.
<h3> Go swimming</h3>
While swimming beneath the falls at Mitchell Falls is prohibited, you can swim in the pool above the falls. Along the trail to the falls, there are also fantastic sights and swimming spots to enjoy.
About 800 meters from the campground, you'll discover <b>Little Mertens Falls</b>, a picturesque location with natural spas and stunning <b>Gwion Gwion artwork</b> on the gorge walls below the falls. Further along the trail, you'll encounter <b>Mertens Gorge</b>, where a spectacular waterfall flows into a deep pool.
<h3> Take to the sky</h3>
You can take a scenic flight (helicopter or light aircraft) from various locations across the Kimberley, such as Broome, Drysdale River Station, and Kununurra, to experience Mitchell Falls from the sky.
Flights can be booked through the Kununurra Visitor Centre or directly at the Mitchell Falls campground. It's a great way to witness this incredible sight from a unique aerial perspective. Tickets start from $130.
